Bundaberg Info

Bundaberg (aka 'Bundy') is situated on the Burnett River approximately 385km north of Brisbane and 15km inland from the coast.

Bundaberg is known as the 'Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef' and excellent sub-tropical weather lends itself to tourism activities all year round and an abundance of outdoor activities. Popular attractions include the Bundaberg Rum Distillery, Lady Elliot and Lady Musgrave Islands, the Mystery Craters (South Kolan), the Mon Repos Turtle Rookery (near Bargara).

 

History

The first industry in bundaberg was timber, shortly followed by sugarcane (as you can easily tell driving through the area - its everywhere!).

  • 1867 - The Bundaberg area was founded by timbergetters John and Gavin Steuart and Lachlan Tripp.
  • 1868 - Sawmill was erected on the Burnett River downstream from the Steuart and Watson holdings.
  • 1870 - Area surveyed and named 'Bundaberg'.
  • 1882 - First sugar mill opened.
  • 1902 - Gazetted as a town.
  • 1913 - Gazetted as a city.

Attractions

Bundaberg Rum Distillery

A guided tour will have you look, feel and taste your way through the making of the Famous Aussie Spirit. Starting with the raw material molasses, to the aromas of maturing spirit, your temptations will run high for a refreshing sample in the bar with a variety of Bundy mixes and Rum liqueur based drinks.

Lady Elliot Island

Lady Elliot is the southern most coral cay of the Great Barrier Reef. The island has a resort and air srtip and daily flights to/from Bundaberg are available. Activities include snorkelling and scuba diving, reef walking, as well as bird, turtle and whale watching.

Mon Repos Turtle Rookery

Mon Repos Conservation Park is located approx 15km east of Bundaberg. Each year from November to March turtles can be found coming ashore to lay eggs on Mon Repos beach. Guided tours are run by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.

Shopping

Sugarland Shopping Town located at 115 Takalvan St, West Bundaberg. There are 1350 car parks (690 of which are shaded). Late night shopping is Thursday until 9pm. Major stores include: Woolworths, Cornett's Supa IGA, Big W.

Hinkler Central is on the corner of Maryborough Street, Electra Street and Barolin Street and is only a few kilometres away from Bundaberg CBD and train station. There are 1070 car parks (770 are fully underground). Late night shopping is Thursday until 9pm. Major stores include: Coles, Kmart, Woolworths and The Reject Shop.

Population: 60,000 (Approx).

Occupations: Labourers 15.9%, Technicians and Trades Workers 15.2%, Professionals 14.4%, Clerical and Administrative Workers 12.9% and Sales Workers 12.0%.

Income: The median weekly individual income for persons aged 15 years and over who were usual residents was $364, compared with $466 in Australia. The median weekly household income was $702, compared with $1,027 in Australia. The median weekly family income was $896, compared with $1,171 in Australia.

Families: 36.6% were couple families with children, 44.2% were couple families without children, 18.0% were one parent families and 1.2% were other families.

Dwellings: 23,929 (Approx) occupied private dwellings counted in Bundaberg (QLD) (Statistical District): 80.8% were separate houses, 5.6% were semi-detached, row or terrace houses, townhouses etc, 8.5% were flats, units or apartments and 4.9% were other dwellings.

Dwelling Occupancy: Median weekly rent was $163, compared to $190 in Australia. The median monthly housing loan repayment was $953, compared to $1,300 in Australia. The average household size was 2.5 and the average number of persons per bedroom was 1.1.

Dwelling - Tenure: 37.3% of occupied private dwellings were fully owned, 25.7% were being purchased and 29.1% were rented.

Dwelling - Rentals: 48.2% were rented from a real estate agent, 12.4% were rented from a State or Territory housing authority and 36.5% were rented from other landlord type. In comparison, in Australia 50.5% were rented from a real estate agent and 14.9% from a state or territory housing authority.

Household Composition: 67.4% of occupied private dwellings were family households, 23.4% were lone person households and 2.8% were group households.
